Link PB: Winona YMCA to move
WINONA — Key stakeholders in the Winona Family YMCA community gathered Thursday night to hear what has long been rumored: It's time for the Winona YMCA to move. Derek Madsen, chief executive officer of the Winona YMCA, said the capital campaign's silent phase is officially over, and it is time to let those connected with the YMCA and the community as a whole in on the secret. "We've raised about $9 million, and we're moving to a goal of $13 million," he said. Additionally, the YMCA has a soft commitment for another $2.52 million for a total of more than $11.5 million. "This has been Winona's worst-kept secret for the last couple of years," said Ken Mogren, a member of the fundraising committee. "We've raised enough to consider it a go

Nearly a year ago, the Destination Medical Center Corp. We've accomplished a lot over a short time period. Rochester has experienced $152.4 million in private investments in the designated DMC districts since mid-2013. We've built the project pipeline and driven local, national and global awareness of the opportunities in Rochester.
Link PB View: Joint DMC meeting has potential
Thursday, DMCC Board Member and former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said he'd like a chance to ask the council to address transportation issues, and during a meeting earlier in the week Rochester council members voiced a desire for more input from the DMCC Board. As Rybak noted, a joint meeting offers a chance to move forward and make sure both bodies are headed in the same direction. "If we get this right, in the next six months we will all know what our roles are and what our values are," he said.

Link PB's Randy Petersen: Answer a challenge to help face new challenges
The first In the Shadow of Growth forum organized by the Justice and Peace Committee of the Congregational Church United Church of Christ sparked my interest. I attended that event specifically to hear reports regarding expected community impacts. While reports from Cheryl Jacobson of the Olmsted County Housing Redevelopment Authority, Major Jim Fye of the Salvation Army and others provided useful information, the responses from the audience were just as interesting.

A grassroots organization aimed at keeping public attention on Rochester's growing community needs met Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church to set the group's priorities. The In The Shadow of Growth group's second meeting drew more than 100 people. Rochester resident Dave Beal moderated the event, emphasizing the group was not focused on or opposed to the city's Destination Medical Center initiative. Instead, he said the group wants to make sure all needs are addressed as the city grows.

Sen. Carla Nelson thought it would have been easier. The Rochester Republican said she thought changing local regulations to provide oversight for small lodging houses created specifically for patients and their families would be an easy fix. Certainly, it didn't need state legislation.

Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that Cbeam will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, Cbeam's distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevancies with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements.

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. Cbeam could be an interesting first step.
